Get a Grip: Toyota’s AWD Sedans
From wintery conditions to dirt and muddy roads, AWD allows drivers to venture off the beaten path—literally.
By shifting power between the front and back wheels, all-wheel drive enhances traction control as a type of four-wheel drive system, and though it’s typically only offered on SUVs, Toyota is now offering it on two of their most popular sedans; the Camry, America’s best-selling sedan for over 17 years, and the Avalon, Toyota’s flagship sedan.
The Toyota-developed Dynamic Torque Control AWD system will be available as a standalone option for the Camry LE, XLE, SE and XSE grades and on Avalon XLE and Limited grades. These are the first Camrys in 21 years to include AWD and the first-ever Avalons.
Performance capabilities for both the Camry AWD and Avalon AWD are as follows:
- Both the Camry AWD and Avalon AWD offer a high-efficiency 2.5-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine and an 8-speed Direct-Shift automatic transmission
- Most Camry AWD grades have 202 horsepower
- Camry XSE AWD and both Avalon AWD grades have 205 horsepower with dual exhaust
- Camry EPS-estimated fuel economies are 25/34/29 for the LE and SE and 25/34/28 for the XLE and XSE.
But these AWD sedans are being praised for more than just their performance.
The Dynamic Torque Control AWD system was developed by Toyota to provide effective traction in inclement and slippery weather while minimizing the drag on fuel economy that’s usually associated with AWD. In the Camry and Avalon AWD sedans, this system can direct up to 50% of engine torque to the rear wheels to provide stability, but can also easily disengage when not needed and re-engage when needed.
