If you are curious as to how the RAV4 fairs against its competition, then continue reading, as we compare and contrast Toyota's ever-popular crossover with the likes of Nissan's Rogue CUV.

Power and Performance

Beneath the hood of the Toyota RAV4 crossover, you will find Toyota's 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, connected to a 6-speed automatic transmission. While front-wheel drive comes standard and offers the best fuel economy of the RAV4 lineup, an optional all-wheel drive (AWD) system can be had for added traction and confidence on all road surfaces. With 176 horsepower and 172 lb-ft of torque on tap, the RAV4 has plenty of juice for everyday life, from hauling passengers and cargo to merging and passing with confidence. The 2016 Nissan Rogue also comes equipped with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, but it only produces 170 hp. While the difference in horsepower may not seem significant, it clearly makes a difference, as the RAV4 has a maximum towing capacity of 500 pounds greater than the Rogue (1,500 lbs vs. 1,000 lbs). For more power and capability from your new crossover, opt for the Toyota RAV4 over Nissan's Rogue.

Safety Ratings and Features

In addition to power and versatility, many crossover shoppers are searching for solid vehicles that will keep them and their friends and loved ones safe out on the road. Based on its crash test scores from the NHTSA, the 2016 Toyota RAV4 does that -- and does it very well! In the NHTSA's overall crash test, the RAV4 received five stars out of five. The Nissan Rogue, on the other hand, was rated at just four stars out of five. The Toyota RAV4 also scores better in the passenger side frontal barrier test with four stars, while the Rogue only scored three stars. The Toyota RAV4 is offered with the Toyota Safety Sense P System (TSS-P) advanced safety suite, as well as standard safety features like Toyota's Star Safety System and eight airbags. The Nissan Rogue clearly didn't rate as highly in the NHTSA's crash tests and does not come with an advanced active safety system like the TSS-P found on the RAV4. In safety ratings and features, the Toyota wins again!

Style and Design

For 2016, the new Toyota RAV4 returns with a fresh look, thanks to its recent restyling which provided an even sportier and athletic design. In fact, the latest Toyota RAV4 looks more like a small SUV than a compact crossover in that it has that curb appeal and road presence that makes it look ready to tackle the trails! Nissan's Rogue features more subdued styling, both inside and out, and comes off as a people mover more than a sport ute. While both of these crossovers offer some impressive technology inside, the RAV4 looks more futuristic or modern, while the Rogue is styled more conservatively. As far as the interior, in the back seat of the Nissan Rogue, passengers sit significantly higher than front passengers, which may feel a bit cramped and uncomfortable compared to the RAV4's more airy and spacious feeling second row of seating. Drivers will also notice how well thought out the RAV4's touchscreen interface is -- especially in comparison to the clunkier version found in the Rogue.
